Part 2 of the Top Down Shooter Series will be posted Friday, two one-off special vids I had worked on prior to getting this cold will be posted over the next couple days, and I’m going to try to record the Zombie Shooter – How to Apply Generic Shooter Sample Project Updates tomorrow to post during the day tomorrow. I cannot promise the last will be completed.
For those new to Mindless Pursuits, I am a survivor of multiple battles with cancer. As a result of a lot of chemo-induced nausea, I have a lot of scar tissue in my throat and some in my larynx. The cold inflamed this scar tissue, and having to run the A/C here in Minnesota has made the air so dry that it is irritating the tissue even more. I was prescribed a couple of anti-inflammatories today, but they may take a couple of days to work and I was told not to stress my voice, so I’m trying to take it easy.
Regardless, things will go back onto the regular schedule beginning Monday, as this medicine should allow me to get back to recording by the weekend (I hope), and if not – I’ll use the robot voice temporarily and redub the videos as soon as I can.
For those who want to discuss Mindless Pursuits tutorials or other game development talks, the forum is now live (see link at top)! It’s a simple, no-frills forum, but if learners start using it, I’ll spruce it up a bit more. Right now, it’s just getting started. Feel free to talk about existing tutorials there, ask questions, offer suggestions for future tutorials and whatever else you feel applies to Mindless Pursuits. Share your experiences with other game development items such as tools, engines, project planning and more!
I’m not one to do a lot of real-time discussion for things like ICQ, Slack, Twitter or the like, so the forum is the best place to get a response from me. See you there!
Woah – it’s been a while! Oops. I never intended to take a half a year break from Mindless Pursuits, but maybe that was what was needed. For those who aren’t aware, in addition to Mindless Pursuits, I also own and create art for Butterfly Bay Design, along with my daughters. Between Butterfly Bay Design work, and other things going on, I more or less lost track of time. Recent creative impulses have gotten me back into the realm of the whimsical though! So – what’s been happening, and what is planned?
First – while I haven’t been cartooning in a while, I plan to get back to it. Not on a regular schedule, but as whimsy strikes me. I’ve given up on the idea of an ongoing webcomic with an internal continuity, as while I liked my character ideas, I just don’t feel I can come up with fresh material regularly for it. The idea of putting that pressure on also tends to stymie my creativity, so it’s probably better overall if I drop it and just make the occasional gag strip.
Second – the anime love still runs strong in our household, and my oldest daughter is attending Anime Detour with me at the beginning of April! It’s going to be a lot of fun, and though I won’t be cosplaying as I’d originally planned, she’ll be going as Yomiko Readman from Read or Die. It’ll be her first time going to an anime convention so hopefully she’ll have a blast!
Finally – I’m going to be getting back to creating and selling items under the Mindless Pursuits brand. I had stopped to focus on Butterfly Bay, but am finding that my goofy, fun creative side needs just as much of an outlet as my more serious art side does. As a result, I’m going to be trying to better balance putting my creative energy into projects that cover the spectrum, beginning with an attempt to make a ‘Doctor Cthulhu’ bust. It will be my first real attempt at sculpture, and I don’t know yet how successful I’ll be. I am certainly looking forward to the attempt! I’ll be blogging about it here and on the Butterfly Bay Design blog. It may or may not be a quick project. We’ll have to see how I do.
So that’s it. Hopefully this is just the start of many things to come. Thank you for hanging in here during my unanticipated hiatus, and I look forward to bringing you new stuff very soon!
Welcome to the revamp of Mindless Pursuits, my personal blog and playground. For those who remember this site from it’s days as a shop, or from it’s days as a geek blog, welcome back — this won’t be the site you remember. For those who are new — welcome aboard! I’m an individual with a number of different focuses in life, and I’m finding that I focus best and feel best when I blog about things. As a personal blog, this blog will be very self-centered and that’s just the reality of personal blogs as they’re about the lives and interests of the person writing them. In this case, it’s a blog pertaining to the interests and activities of an artist and software developer with two kids who is at the tail end of his second battle with cancer. So topics will vary widely from art to software to my kids to my health and to other areas like recipes, anime and gaming because all of those areas are of interest.
I’m also working on video blogging. I’m going to try to avoid a lot of overlap between the two, and use them to supplement each other. We’ll see how well that goes, but I look forward to trying it out. In the meantime, I hope those of you who check in find it interesting!
